Keeping sharks in aquaria is popular but can only be recommended to skilled saltwater aquarists with sufficiently large tanks. It is true that sharks can be found in bodies of freshwater in the wild, but none of those species are recommended for hobby aquarists since they grow so large. In many cases they are also endangered in the wild and should not be removed from their natural habitat. If you are offered a “freshwater shark” in a pet store, it is most likely not a true shark but a type of Asian minnow. The so called Bala shark is for instance not a shark at all; it is only called shark to make it easier to sell. It is normally sold when fairly small, but you should keep in mind that it can reach a length of 36 centimetres (14 inches) and require a big aquarium. It is also quite cruel to keep this fish without other members of its own species, because it is a schooling fish in the wild. Ideally get at least six Bala sharks for your aquarium if you wish to keep this species. You can find more info about Bala sharks and general fish keeping on AC Tropical Fish. Unfortunately, many people buy sharks on a whim without knowing what they are getting themselves into and the sharks are of course the ones who end up suffering the most in the hands of unsuitable owners. Always obtain plenty of aquarium sharks information before you make any purchases. Also read up on general aquarium maintenance, e.g. water quality management, disease prevention, andalgae control, before you decide to bring a shark home. |
